On the other hand, edge computing involves processing data closer to where it is generated, at the edge of the network, reducing latency and allowing for faster real-time processing. It is particularly useful for applications that require immediate response or where there are bandwidth limitations. In simple terms, cloud computing is like using a centralized data center, while edge computing is like having smaller processing units closer to the source of data.

  • Requires significant bandwidth for data transmission between client devices and the cloud data center.
  • Provides high scalability, as additional computing resources can be added easily.
  • Involves centralized computing resources located in data centers, typically at a distant location from the end user.


Edge Computing:
  • Distributes computing resources closer to the data source or end user.
  • Focuses on limited localized data processing and performing computations.
  • Offers reduced latency, faster response times, and processing as data processing occurs locally.
  • Requires less bandwidth since data processing occurs closer to the data source, reducing the need for extensive data transfer.
  • Offers limited scalability, as the computing resources are distributed and constrained by the capabilities of edge devices or edge servers.
